1. Review Your Annual Plan (or Set New Intentions)
The first step in this September audit is to take a look back at any annual plan you created at the start of the year.
If you did make one – be honest, how often have you actually looked at it since January? This is your chance to check back in. Personally, I’ve been revisiting my own goals and intentions lately, and it’s always such an eye-opening process to see how things are lining up with what I originally envisioned.
Ask yourself:
- Am I on track with the goals I set?
- Do those intentions still feel aligned with where I’m at now?
- Is there anything that needs tweaking or letting go of?
And if you didn’t create an annual plan back in January, no problem. September is the perfect time to set one to three simple intentions to guide you through the rest of the year. This isn’t about creating a massive, detailed plan. It’s about giving yourself some clarity and focus so you know what you want to achieve between now and December.
Remember that it’s absolutely okay if your goals look different now than they did at the start of the year. A lot can change between January and September, we evolve, our businesses evolve, and our priorities shift. So see this step as a chance to recommit, refresh, or completely reset your intentions so they feel aligned with who you are right now.
2. Review Your Messaging
The next step in your September business audit is to take a fresh look at your messaging.
This doesn’t need to be a huge, time-consuming project. Simply spend a few minutes reviewing your website, social channels, emails, and any other marketing materials. Ask yourself:
- Is this saying what I actually want it to say?
- Does it clearly communicate who I am and how I help people?
- Will someone new instantly “get” my point of view and approach as a coach?
One of my favourite frameworks to use with clients when it comes to messaging is really simple: Problem → People → Solution → Results.
- Problem: What challenge are you helping people solve?
- People: Who exactly are you working with?
- Solution: What’s your unique way of supporting them?
- Results: What shifts or transformations can they expect from working with you?
Running your website copy, social bios, and content through this lens is such a helpful way to check if your messaging is landing.
And here’s the thing, most coaches’ messaging isn’t as clear or compelling as it could be. If your words aren’t grabbing attention, connecting, and pulling people in, it’s worth making some tweaks.
The good news is this doesn’t need to be a big overhaul. Sometimes small changes – like refreshing your Instagram bio, writing a couple of new pieces of content on different topics, or tweaking the way you describe your work in your emails – can make a massive difference.
Messaging is one of those areas where even quick adjustments can create more clarity and momentum.
(And if you’d love to go deeper with your messaging, this is exactly the kind of thing we cover inside Spark, which kicks off on the 15th!)
3. Audit Your Offer Suite
Next up, let’s talk about your offers.
Take a moment to sit down and get really clear on what you’re actually selling in your coaching business right now. Ask yourself:
- Which offers are working well and consistently selling?
- Which ones aren’t performing the way you’d hoped?
- Do any of them need a refresh in terms of positioning or messaging?
- Are there gaps in your offer suite that could be filled?
If you have multiple offers, it’s worth checking whether they flow together in a way that makes sense. Do they guide people on a journey with you, or is there a missing piece?
Something that is equally important is to consider your own experience of delivering each offer. Which ones feel joyful and energising? Which ones feel like a drag? Sometimes the best business shifts come from letting go of the things that don’t light you up anymore.
The key here is to keep this audit simple. The temptation can be to over-plan and endlessly brainstorm new offers, when actually the biggest wins usually come from tweaking and refining what you already have. Even small changes – like reworking your sales page copy, adjusting pricing, or slightly shifting the structure of an offer – can make a big difference in how well it sells.
So, keep it quick, keep it focused, and walk away with a few practical adjustments you can start implementing straight away.
4. Makeover Your Marketing
The next piece to audit is your marketing.
Here’s the simple but powerful question to ask yourself:
What am I doing so that new people are finding me?
It’s such a clarifying question, because often what we think is marketing is actually nurturing the audience we already have. And while nurturing is super important, if your community isn’t growing, you’re eventually going to run into challenges.
That doesn’t mean you need hundreds or thousands of new people pouring into your world every month. A sustainable, successful business can thrive on steady, consistent growth. But you do need to make sure there’s a way for fresh faces to find you.
To audit your marketing, take a look at things like:
- How many people are joining your email list each month?
- Are you getting new views, listens, or followers on your content?
- Are you connecting with new people through networking, collaborations, or referrals?
If you realise that most of your energy is going into serving your existing audience (and not bringing in new people), this is your nudge to tweak your approach. Even a small shift like showing up on a new platform, guesting on a podcast, or adding a simple freebie to grow your list can make a big difference.
The key takeaway? Marketing isn’t just about staying visible, it’s about welcoming new people into your world on a consistent basis.
5. What Do You Need to Let Go Of?
Finally, no September audit would be complete without asking: what do I need to let go of?
Autumn is the season of release. Just like the trees shed their leaves, we can use this time of year to consciously let go of what’s no longer serving us so we can create space for new growth.
In your business, that might look like:
- Letting go of marketing activities that aren’t working (and freeing up energy for the ones that are).
- Releasing offers you no longer enjoy delivering – or that just aren’t selling.
- Saying goodbye to clients or types of clients who don’t feel aligned.
- Shifting your messaging to better reflect who you truly want to work with.
- Releasing unhelpful mindsets or patterns – like feeling “not enough,” comparing yourself to other coaches, or doubting whether your business can really thrive.
Remember: letting go isn’t failure. It’s often the most powerful step you can take, because it creates the space for the things that do light you up and move your business forward.
This time of year naturally supports us in turning inward, reflecting, and releasing. So tune into that energy, and ask yourself honestly: what do I need to let go of in my business right now, so that something better can grow in its place?
It’s such a powerful note to end your September business audit on—and one that can set you up for a much lighter, more aligned final stretch of the year.
